Gmail is celebrating its 21st anniversary by introducing easier encryption for users. This new feature is designed for businesses in regulated industries, helping them encrypt emails more efficiently, regardless of the recipient.
Simplified Encryption for Enterprises
Previously, encrypting emails required complex proprietary solutions and an understanding of Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. Now, companies only need Client-Side Encryption on a supported Workspace Enterprise Plus setup with the Assured Controls add-on. This ensures that encryption keys are managed by the customer rather than Google servers, adding an extra layer of security.
How Encryption Works in Gmail
Once the enterprise-level setup is complete, enabling encryption is straightforward. While composing an email, users will see a lock icon in the top right corner of the pop-out window. Selecting “Turn on” under “Additional encryption” activates the feature, turning the window blue to indicate a secure environment.
Accessing and Expanding Encrypted Emails
Gmail and Google Workspace users will see encrypted emails automatically decrypted. If the recipient uses a different email provider, they receive a link to view the email in a restricted version of Gmail via a guest Google Workspace account. Currently, companies can sign up for beta access, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks.
